Lubbock, Texas Travel Guide

Mac Davis once sang "happiness is Lubbock in my rearview mirror," but for many this plains community is an oasis in a vast undeveloped territory. With a student population of over 20,000 at Texas Tech University, the city offers many cultural events.

Lubbock is also known as the heart of Texas's burgeoning wine business with award-winning operations that recall the tradition of the staked plains, albeit stakes used to hold up grapevines these days.

The city is also known as the home of musician Buddy Holly as well as a long list of other performers, all remembered at the Buddy Holly Statue and Walk of Fame.

Lubbock's history dates back far before these famous local performers, however. When Francisco Coronado and his explorers arrived in West Texas 400 years ago, they found the grass high and the terrain devoid of landmarks. Like Hansel and Gretel on horseback, the Spaniards drove stakes in the soil to blaze the path they had taken across the region they called Llano Estacado or staked plains.

Today the high plains of West Texas are marked by interstates that carve the vast region into manageable chunks and connect the widely scattered cities. This is the Texas that many picture at the mention of the Lone Star State, a land of leathery faced cowboys, rolling tumbleweeds, lonesome windmills, and pumping oil derricks. Here the roads stretch straight to the horizon, and distances are measured, not in miles, but in hours. Locals consider an 80-mile haul "right around the corner."
