Lubbock Attractions
American Wind Power Center and Windmill Museum. Surrounded by miles of plains, the location was a natural setting for one of the most unusual museum venues in the region: the American Wind Power Center and Windmill Museum. Located in Mackenzie Park, the 28-acre museum showcases rare windmills, with information on the importance of harnessing this natural source of power. Buddy Holly Statue and Walk of Fame.This statue of Lubbock's most famous resident is surrounded by plaques honoring other entertainment greats from West Texas, such as James Dean, Mac Davis, and Waylon Jennings. Located at Sixth St. and Avenue Q. Buffalo Springs Lake Recreational Area. Activities available at this recreation area include camping, fishing, volleyball, jet skiing, and water skiing. There are also nature trails, horseshoe pits, areas to hike, and volleyball. From Lubbock, 5 mi southeast on FM 835. Lubbock Lake Landmark State Historic Park. This site has been inhabited by humans since 12,000 BC. Evidence of mammoth, camels, giant bison and other prehistoric animals have been discovered here. The park includes an interpretive center with artifacts and a children's learning center. From Lubbock, 2 mi north of campus Loop 289 and Landmark Dr. Mackenzie Park. This day-use park features a prairie dog town. There's also a picnic area and a small amusement park. Off I-27, drive 4 mi east on Broadway to Park Rd. 18. National Ranching Heritage Center. Windmills were a dependable source of energy for the area's ranches for many years; groups can learn more about the ranching history of this region at the National Ranching Heritage Center. This museum featuring historic ranch homes and outbuildings that have been moved to this site to depict the history of ranching and its importance on the Panhandle plains. The museum is located on the grounds of Texas Tech University. Science Spectrum--Omnimax. This dome-screen theater presents specially produced movies on a variety of natural history themes. The Science Spectrum is a hands-on museum illustrating the concepts of science for all ages. Located at 2579 S. Loop 289 between University and Indiana Aves. Texas Tech University. This college
has a special emphasis on petrochemical studies. Within the college lies
the Museum of Texas Tech University (4th St. and Indiana Ave.),
which offers a survey collection encompassing history, art, and science.
The museum is also home to the Moody Planetarium, which features star
programs Wineries. The rich soil and temperate weather of this region has drawn award-winning wineries and international acclaim to Lubbock. Probably the most celebrated winery in the state is Llano Estacado. Cap*Rock Winery, housed in a European-style chalet, is the second largest winery in the state.
