Lubbock Culture for Groups

Spend an afternoon tourig elegant wineries. Tour rooms filled with high-tech stainless steel vats and European oak casks. Sip Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon in a million-dollar tasting room.

A scene from California's Napa Valley? Sure. But groups can have the same experience in Lubbock. Located on a plain Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado named the Llano Estacado, the Lubbock vineyards enjoy perfect growing conditions and soil. Lubbock area grapes are shipped to wineries throughout Texas and their home product has won numerous international awards. Llano Estacado Winery and Cap*Rock Winery, housed in a European-style chalet, both wineries offer group tours and tastings.

The fruit of the plains is just one attraction Lubbock has to offer meeting planners, however. The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and Ballet Lubbock each feature guest artists during their annual seasons. At the Godbold Cultural Center groups can enjoy both visual and performing arts.

As home of Texas Tech University, this city also contains several excellent museums. The outdoor Ranching Heritage Center features historic ranch homes and outbuildings that have been moved to this site to depict the history of ranching and its importance on the Panhandle plains. Also on campus, the Moody Planetarium gives delegates the opportunity to see special planetarium programs. Planners find that family groups especially enjoy the Omnimax Theater and Science Spectrum Museum, filled with hands-on displays.

Buddy Holly fans recall that this is the rock 'n roll legend's home town, and he his honored with a statue and Walk of Fame. Located in front of the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, the bronze statue is the centerpiece of the circular walk honoring West Texas musicians. With nine meeting rooms, a 1,325 seat theater, and a 40,000-square-foot pedestrian mall, the center includes a ballroom, portable dance floor, and new interiors.

"Lubbock is a great place for meetings because we try to offer value added service," explained Nicole Robbins, director of marketing and tourism for the Lubbock Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We try to learn what would make a meeting in Lubbock special. Our attractions are diverse enough to accommodate a convention. We get a lot of repeat business."
