Nuevo Laredo Shopping

From inexpensive paper flowers and hammocks to designer clothes and handcrafted furniture, Nuevo Laredo boasts some of the border's best shopping. Here's a look at some of our favorites:

Nuevo Mercado. Avenida Guerrero, four blocks from the International Bridge. The mercado, or market, is the one place that all tourists visit. Here you find many American faces, English-speaking shopkeepers, and a very friendly atmosphere.

Built around two open courtyards filled with umbrella-shaded tables, the two-story market sells just about every imaginable Mexican-made product. Frozen margaritas and Corona beer are in evidence everywhere, offering a chance to cool down after several hours in the stores.

Most shops have no air conditioning, even though summer days often top 100 degrees. Open daily.

Marti's. This upscale, air-conditioned shop is the nicest store in Nuevo Laredo and the priciest.

You don't get a chance to bargain here, so be content with the fact that you're buying the finest jewelry, furnishings, and clothing that Nuevo Laredo has to offer.

This place is a favorite with both wealthy Mexicans and South Texas shoppers looking for something above the usual mercado fare. Located on Avenida Guerrero, three blocks past the International Bridge.

El Cid Glass Factory. This glass factory is one of Nuevo Laredo's shopping treasures. Located over a mile beyond the mercado, you'll want to take a taxi here and then allow plenty of time to shop for blue-, green-, and red-rimmed glasses, bowls, Christmas ornaments, and more. This is Nuevo Laredo's only glass factory, operated by Romualdo Canales for over 30 years. Located at Avenida Reforma 3861.
