Midland, Texas Travel Guide

Often mentioned with its sister city, Odessa, Midland has a rich oil history. This area is the hub of the Permian Basin's oil and gas reserves and many businesses in the city are related to the industry.

Attractions:

Bush Driving Tours. As the former home of both George W. Bush and Laura Bush, the city has launched a new Bush Driving Tour, a 15-mile tour of the city to former homes of the Bush family. The self-guided tour takes travelers by George W. Bush's childhood home and more.

Confederate Air Force and American Airpower Heritage Museum. This museum contains the nation's largest collection of flyable WWII combat aircraft from around the world. Located at Midland International Airport.

Museum of the Southwest Complex. This 1934 house now contains an art collection highlighting artists of the Southwest, as well as a museum and a planetarium. The complex includes:

  • The Fredda Turner Durham Children's Museum, a hands-on museum for children of all ages. There's a special computer area and play area.
  • The Marion West Blakemore Planetarium, which presents special sky shows as well as exhibits and a gallery.Located at 1705 W. Missouri Ave.

Nita Stewart Haley Memorial Library/J. Evetts Haley History Center. This museum and history center features local history exhibits, as well as an extensive collection on Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. The museum also boasts the original Alamo bell. Located at 1805 W. Indiana.

The Petroleum Museum. This museum tells the story of advancements in the petroleum industry with a pumping unit, rig and other field equipment. Located at 1500 I-20W.

Special Events:

October: World War II Flying Air Show.This air show includes antique aircraft and food offerings. Held at the Midland Intl Airport.
