Odessa, Texas Travel Guide

Often mentioned with the adjacent city of Midland, Odessa is located in the mineral-rich Permian Basin. The city has been thriving with the petroleum business since the 1920s although vast ranches are still located in the area.

To many travelers, Texas is synonymous with the oil industry and, in Odessa, that partnership is a reality.

Attractions:

Globe Theatre. This authentic replica of the Globe Theatre in England presents Shakespearean productions year around. The Anne Hathaway Cottage Archival & Shakespearean Library is a replica of the cottage in which Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, lived. The cottage contains a Shakespearean library and period antiques. Located at 2308 Shakespeare Rd. at Odessa College.

Meteor Crater. The most unique location in this plains city is the Odessa meteor crater. Formed over 20,000 years ago, this crater (the nation's second largest) can be viewed by visitors at the Odessa Meteor Crater Museum. Located west of town, the visitors center and museum tells a fascinating story of the crater's origin. Travelers can take a marked trail through the crater.From Odessa, 8 miles west via I-20 or U.S. 80 to Meteor Crater Rd. exit.

Presidential Museum. Another unique museum is The Presidential Museum and Leadership Library, the country’s only museum dedicated solely to the office of the US President. This museum covers presidential election campaigns, inaugurations, and more. The facility includes a research center. Located at 622 N. Lee.

Special Events:

January: SandHorsehill Hereford and Quarter Horse Show and Rodeo. This event features a horse show, rodeo riding, roping, and precision riding.
