Monahans, Texas Travel Guide Region: Big Bend Country
This West Texas community was established as a railroad stop. Today it is the retail and business center for the surrounding oil and cattle country. The city is often visited by those wanting a glimpse at the unique sand dunes, formed from ancient sandstone. These dunes are not found elsewhere in West Texas and are ever changing with the shifting wind. Attractions Million Barrel Museum. This structure, built in 1928, was first an oil storage facility. Today the museum recalls the oil wells that made this community a boom town. You can also see a former jail and an historic home here. Location: 400 Museum Blvd. Monahans Sandhills State Park. This park contains dunes that span thousands of acres. The Sandhills Interpretive Center provides information about the dunes, including their use by Native americans, as well as the barrier they presented to pioneers traveling through the region. Location: I-20 to MM 86 to Rte. 41 Pyote Museum and Rattlesnake Bomber Base. This historical base was the home of the 19th (B17) Bomb Group during World War II. The museum displays base memorabilia and other local artifacts. Location: I-20, 15 miles west of Monahans.
