Texas Music Museums and Attractions Walks of Fame South Texas Music Walk of Fame, Corpus Christi. New names are added annually to this walk of fame located on Water Street. The stars are limited to performers who are from South Texas and presently live anywhere or performers from anywhere who live south of San Antonio. Tejano Walk of Fame, Edinburg. Located at 415 W. McIntyre Street, this walk is built around a statue of Edinburg native Jose Roberto Pulido, a pioneer in Tejano music. West Texas Walk of Fame, Lubbock. What began to honor Lubbock's Buddy Holly became a walk of fame for musicians, artists, actors and entertainers from throughout West Texas. Museums Bob Wills Museum, Turkey. This museum, located at Sixth and Lyles streets, features the career of the "King of Western Swing." Buddy Holly Center, Lubbock. Located at 1801 Avenue G, this museum showcases the career of Lubbock legend Buddy Holly as well as other Texas musicians. Heart of Texas Country Music Museum, Brady. The museum has a variety of exhibits, from a cowboy hat worn by George Strait to a Tammy Wynette stage outfit. The museum has limited hours so check before your trip to confirm opening times. Lefty Frizzell Museum, Corsicana. Located at 912 West Park Avenue, this museum traces the career of Lefty Frizzell, a country songwriter whose work included “If You’ve Got The Money Honey, I’ve Got The Time." The museum includes a life-size statue, costumes, photographs, and original song manuscripts as well as exhibits on other famous Texas musicians. The museum is located in a shotgun house similar to the one in which he was born in Tucker Town, near Corsicana. 903-654-4846 Museum of the Gulf Coast, Port Arthur. Janis Joplin, a Port Arthur native, is featured prominently in this museum with exhibits that range from stage costumes to the performer's car. You'll also find exhibits on other Texas musicians here as well as displays on the various types of music enjoyed in the Port Arthur region. Roy Orbison Museum, Wink. Tiny Wink is home to this museum located on TX 115. Along with boyhood memorabilia, you'll find displays here on Orbison's career...and even a pair of his famous glasses. The museum is open limited hours so call and make sure it will be open or can be opened for your visit. 432-527-3622 Selena Museum, Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame and Museum, Alice. Named the official museum for Tejano music history by the legislature, this museum traces the history of Tejano sounds and also sponsors November's Noche de Fiesta Tejana. Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and Tex Ritter Museum, Carthage. This $2.5 million museum opened in 2002 and has since expanded to include not only native Tex Ritter but other Texas musicians. Texas Fiddlers Hall of Fame, Hallettsville. This museum, located in the Knights of Columbus Hall, highlights the careers of the fiddlers who have won the Texas State Championship Fiddlers Frolics, also in Hallettsville. Texas Music Museum, Austin. Located at 1009 E. 11th Street, this museum features changing exhibits on Texas music. Texas Musicians Museum, Hillsboro. Located at 212 North Waco Street, this new addition to the Texas music museum scene has a variety of exhibits. Its most unusual display is the casket of the Big Bopper (sans the Big Bopper; he was relocated into a nicer casket in 2007, almost half a century after his death in the crash that killed Buddy Holly.) Memorials & Memorial Statues Austin Music Memorial, Austin. This new memorial is located on the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts at 701 W. Riverside Drive. The first 10 inductees were added in March 2008; this terrace is open to visitors around the clock. Buddy Holly, Lubbock. Jim Reeves Memorial, Carthage. A statue of country performer Jim Reeves stands three miles east of Carthage on US 79. The memorial also serves as a grave for Reeves' dog, Cheyenne. Lightnin' Hopkins, Crockett. This statue immortalizes Hopkins with his cigar and guitar in Lightnin' Hopkins Park. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Austin. Selena, Mirador de la Flor, Corpus Christi. |
