Janie's Table. Outstanding barbecue, potato salad, and beans are popular choices at this restaurant (formerly Guadalupe Smoked Meats) housed in the old Martin Brothers Store. The owners also operate a mail-order business for people who can't find barbecue like this at home. Located at 1299 Gruene Rd.

Gristmill Restaurant. Housed in the ruins of a 100-year-old cotton gin, this low-key family restaurant overlooks Guadalupe River. Known for chicken-fried steak, grilled chicken, and steaks as well as catfish, burgers, and other Texas favorites. You can eat inside or outside on the deck overlooking the river. Located at 1287 Gruene Road.
