New Braunfels, Texas

Also see: Gruene, San Antonio, San Marcos

Today this city located just north of San Antonio is a favorite because of its German festivals and food, antiques shopping (so much it calls itself "The Antiques Capital of Texas") and summer water activities on the Guadalupe River and in Texas's largest water park.

Things weren't always quite so welcoming in the New Braunfels area, however. Over one hundred and fifty years ago, Prince Carl of Solms, Braunfels and a group of German settlers founded the city of New Braunfels, naming it for their homeland. Afraid of Indian attack, the prince donned an iron vest, wearing it everywhere even in the sweltering summer heat.

After 11 months in Texas, Prince Solms returned to Germany to marry Sophie, a woman he had hoped would return to Texas with him. Sophie had no interest in coming to this frontier land, however, so the prince remained in Germany, leaving New Braunfels with his group of immigrants.
