New Mexico's Atomic History

Trinity Site

At this site, closed to the public, the world's first atomic bomb exploded on July 16, 1945. Located west of the town of Carrizozo in the desert.

Alamogordo

The gateway to the 1.1 million acre Lincoln National Forest, Alamogordo (Spanish for "fat cottonwood") became a boomtown in World War II.

With its proximity to White Sands and to miles of uninhabited land, the city became home of Holloman Bombing and Gunnery Range, now Holloman Air Force Base. Providing training for bombing crews, the site now is vital in rocket research and is home of the Stealth F117A aircraft.
