Silver City & Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

Located in the foothills of the Pinos Altos Range of the mogollon Mountains, Silver City was founded as a mining community in the 1870s. The city is surrounded by the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest, the first wilderness area designated by the Congress of the United States.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Surrounded by the Gila National Forest, this park site preserves the cliff dwellings of the people of the Mogollon culture. Residents of the area in the late 13C and early 14C, these indigenous people constructed their homes in cliff overhangs.

Today a one-mile loop trail climbs the steep cliffside and visitors can see the remains of the dwellings. A small museum at the park offers interpretive exhibits about the Mogollon culture.

Location:

44 miles north of Silver City on NM 15.
