Very Large Array

Operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and completed in 1981, the Very Large Array is the world's most powerful radio telescope.

The structure is used primarily by astronomers as well as for satellite tracking and weather studies. The facility, composed of 27 metal mirrors 82 feet in diameter, obtains radio signals from space.

A visitors center offers a slide show and displays on radio astronomy. From here, visitors can also take a self-guided tour near one of the 230-ton antennaes for a view of some of the equipment used at the facility.

Location

Located 50 miles west of Socorro on Hwy 60, turn south on NM 52 and west on VLA Access Rd. For more, visit www.nrao.edu/vla/html/VLAhome.shtml
