Texas Outdoors

Fall Foliage

Fall Foliage in Texas Unlike its northern neighbors, however, Texas doesn't have vast displays of color but rather pockets of autumnal glory throughout the region. Where to find foliage displays in East, Hill Country & Central, and the North, West, and Panhandle portions of the state.

Birding

Hummingbirds Keep the Gulf Coast HummingThe ancient people of Mexico once attributed magical powers to the hummingbird or "sunbeam bird." According to legend, Montezuma used the iridescent feathers for his robe. Whether or not these tiny bundles of energy have magic, one thing's for sure. The hummingbird has definitely cast its spell over the residents and visitors of Rockport, Texas.

Wildflowers

Wild About Wildflowers In some parts of the country, April showers bring May flowers, but in South Texas the natives start to get restless in the month of March. Native flowers--from bluebonnets to Indian paintbrushes to Mexican hats--fill the roadsides with color starting in late March and beckon travelers to get out and enjoy the blooms.

The Origin of the Bluebonnet Texas is an area rich in Native American lore and one beautiful tale describes the origin of the bluebonnet.

Flower Fever in the Hill Country It's time to stop and smell the roses--or at least the beautiful Texas wildflowers. This month they can be seen along roadsides throughout the Hill Country. Native flowers--from bluebonnets to Indian paintbrushes to Mexican hats--fill the roadsides with color, beckoning travelers to get out and enjoy the blooms.

The Bluebonnet Trail In other parts of the country, April showers bring May flowers. In central Texas, those showers come with April bluebonnets--the only sure sign of spring a real Texan will accept.

Ecotourism

The Wild, Wild West Although many ecotourism venues are located directly around the cities of West Texas, visitors that venture deeper into West Texas find a rugged region that offers a variety of experiences ranging from rafting to star gazing to mountain climbing.
