Pflugerville, Texas Travel Guide

pflugerville texas

Pflugerville (pronounced Flugerville), located north of Austin, has has almost melded into the capital city. Technically about 15 miles north of the capital city, Pflugerville proper is located four miles east of I-35 on FM 1825 (look for I-35 exit 247).

This community is named for German immigrant Henry Pfluger. (See detailed photo of Pflugerville historical marker) What began as a small community just after the Civil War became the fastest-growing community in Texas in the 1980s. Today growth continues but the community still holds onto its distinctive spirit in its historic downtown.

Travel east on FM 1825 past the subdivisions and strip centers to where FM 1825 becomes Pecan Street. Soon you’ll see small town Texas, especially if you turn north on Railroad Street, continuing for one block to Main Street. Here you’ll find the true “downtown” Pflugerville with dining, shopping, and nightlife in historic buildings.

Those historic buildings as well as the general Pflugerville setting have been the backdrop for many movies. Pflugerville’s Chamber of Commerce is proud to point out its “PflugerWood” connection thanks to a role in movies including A Perfect World, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Courage Under Fire, Newton Boys, Second Hand Lions, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?  and more.

Today Pflugerville is primarily a bedroom community with many commuters heading into Austin daily.

Festivals

Deutchenfest. Scheduled for the third weekend in May, this annual event celebrates Pflugerville’s Old World heritage with a 5K Pfun run, a parade through the historic downtown, rides, live music, and food.

Shopping

Old Prague Market. Next door to the European-Bistro, you’ll find a slice of the Czech Republic. This gift shop specializes in Czech crystal although you’ll also find Czech dolls, polka music, and plenty of candles and stemware. Open Monday through Saturday. Location: 117 E. Main Street
