Poteet, Texas Travel Guide Region: South Texas Plains Named for the town's first postmaster (who ran a combo blacksmith shop and post office), this town 20 miles south of San Antonio is best known as the capital of Texas's strawberry crop. Surrounded by rich agricultural land, Poteet grows not only strawberries but also peanuts, watermelons, and other crops. Along with its strawberry fame (thanks to its annual festival), Poteet is also known as the home of Milton Caniff, creator of the "Steve Canyon" comic strip. Yes, character Poteet Canyon is named for this town of 3,300 residents. Attractions World's Largest Strawberry. Look for the strawberry water tower as well as a giant strawberry statue standing right in front of the Poteet Volunteer Fire Department building.
