Quanah, Texas Travel Guide Region: Panhandle Plains This north Texas community was, at its founding in 1881, named after Quanah Parker, the great Native American leader and son of Cynthia Ann Parker, probably the best-known woman in Texas during the latter half of the 19th century. She was captured by the Comanches from a pioneer fort near Mexia and is said to have died of a broken heart at age 37 after the death of her daughter. Though Quanah never lived here, the town chose the name to connect itself to its Comanche past. Today, Quanah is an agricultural center with thriving cotton and gypsum businesses. Attractions Copper Breaks State Park. The Comanche Indians once roamed these grounds along the Pease River. Today, the park is alive with blue herons, mule deer, jack rabbits, and the rare horned toad. Joining them are hikers, bird-watchers, equestrians and more.
