Round Rock, Texas Travel Guide Nearby communities: Georgetown, Pflugerville
Round Rock was the scene of a Wild West shoot-out
a century ago. Sam Bass was a well-known outlaw in these parts back then,
a stagecoach and train robber who boasted that he'd never killed a man.
Bass planned to make his first bank robbery in Round Rock, but things
went awry when the Texas Rangers learned his scheme. They were waiting
as Bass and his gang rode into town on July 19, 1878, and they gravely
wounded him during a gun battle in the 100 block of East Main Street.
Bass fled from town and died two days later. This colorful figure was buried in the old
Round Rock cemetery, situated on what's now known as Sam Bass Road. The
grave is near an interesting slave cemetery, a reminder of the cotton
industry and plantation system that once dominated this area. Round Rock was also once a part of the stagecoach
route that stretched from Brownsville, Texas, to Helena, Arkansas. Frontiersmen
used the round rock to judge the depth of Brushy Creek before crossing.
Today visitors still can see coach tracks in the Brushy Creek riverbed,
just west of I-35. Attractions:
