This site was once a stagecoach stop on the old Chisholm Trail and served the line that stretched from San Antonio to Little Rock. The old stretch of stagecoach route is now the city's Main Street, lined with antiques shops and specialty stores, many housed in historic structures. In all, 18 buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and 23 boast Texas Historical Markers.

Downtown Salado Creek's Pace Park provides a nice respite from a day of shopping with shady picnic areas and cool waters that fill with summertime swimmers.
