The Salado Mansion. This popular restaurant is housed in a downtown historic building originally built in 1857 for a judge. The antiques-filled restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu includes a variety of Southwestern-inspired dishes including mesquite-grilled trout and steaks. Location: 200 South Main Street.

Stagecoach Inn. This tony restaurant features waitresses who come to your table and recite the day's offerings by heart. Entrees include chicken-fried steak, baked ham, whole catfish, roast prime rib of beef, and T-bone steak. Don't miss the hush puppies or the banana fritters. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Location: 1 Main Street

Robertson's Hams and Choppin' Block. Enjoy a deli sandwich of sugar-cured ham then shop for kitchen collectibles in the extensive gift shop. Location: west side of I-35 at exit 285.
