San Angelo, Texas Travel Guide

The city of San Angelo was built around Fort Concho, a frontier fort. The city is the largest wool and mohair market in the country. Located on the Concho River, a treasure of the region are the pink Concho River pearls. The city is home to Angelo State University.

Attractions:

Angelo State University Planetarium. This is the fourth largest university planetarium in the nation, located on the grounds of Angelo State University (home to about 6300 students). Planetarium shows are open to the public on Thursday and Saturday evenings when classes are in session. Located on the ASU Campus in the Vincent Physical Science Building at 2601 West Avenue End.

Fort Concho National Historic Landmark. This former military post is one of the best preserved forts in the state. Visitors can tour the 23 buildings that once were part of the fort; several include exhibits about the history of the site. Located at 630 S. Oakes, downtown near Concho River.

Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum. The Texas Rangers closed down this facility...but not before it served as a bordello for 50 years. Today the facility is decorated just as it was in its heyday. Open limited afternoon hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Located at 18 E. Concho Avenue.

San Angelo State Park. Located on the shores of the O.C. Fisher Reseroir, this state park is popular for fishing, boating, hiking, and birdwatching. Camping is also available.Located just west of town on U.S. 67.

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. San Angelo's newest attraction is built to resemble a covered wagon. The $5.5 million facility showcases art in various media in the 30,000-square-foot building.
