Dignowity Hill Historic District, San Antonio

Located on the east side of town north of Commerce Street, this historic neighborhood is named for Michael Dignowity, a Czechoslovakian immigrant. Dignowity served as a medical doctor in San Antonio after his arrival in the mid-1800s.

The doctor had to flee the city for his life because of his outspoken views again secession; he didn't return to the city until 1869 and at that time set about trying to recover his property, which at one time extended for blocks. Many of the surrounding land was sold to German businessmen and the neighborhood quickly became a wealthy enclave.

The neighborhood is also known for its numerous cemetaries. In all, over thirty cemetaries dot the historic district, one of the densest collections of cemetaries in the United States.
