October Festivals in San Antonio
Events: Enjoy Greek food, dances, and music at the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church at this three-day fall festival. The event offers guests a taste of such traditional Greek goodies as baklava, dolmades, pastitsio, and souvlaki. You can also purchase imported Greek wines to accompany the homemade food, prepared by the women of the church. Admission: inexpensive Location: 2405 N. Event: The works of over 50 international publishers are honored during February with exhibits, readings, and workshops sponsored by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. The event features works from the US and Latin America. Authors at previous bookfairs have included Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, August Wilson, and Elena Poniatowska. Admission: to the bookfair is free; ticket sales for some readings. Location: Trinity University River Art Show Event: The River Walk is lined with the work of hundreds of Texas artists during this event, always held the first full weekend in October. This annual event is sponsored by the River Art Group, Inc., a group now in operation for over half a century. If you've visited the Alamo City at other times of the year, you may be familiar with the group's River Walk Group Gallery in historic La Villita. Admission: free.
