Government Hill, San Antonio

Located on the north side of town just west of I-35 around Fort Sam Houston, Government Hill is one of the most historic neighborhoods in the city. Approximately 27 percent of the neighborhood contains historic buildings, nine times the percentage of historic buildings found in Colonial Williamsburg.

The site is rich with military history and is known as the home of the Soldier Medic. Military medical personnel from over 30 countries around the globe train at Fort Sam Houston, which is the world's clearinghouse for military combat medicine. The base is adjacent to the original site of the West Texas Military Academy, established in 1893. The academy's most famous graduate was General Douglas MacArthur in 1897.

One of the most unique historic buildings on Government Hill is Terrell Castle, now a B&B. The castle looks out at what was once called General's Row, the elegant homes of the fort's military leaders.
