Monte Vista Historic District

One of San Antonio's oldest neighborhoods, this district was granted by King Philip of Spain as public land in 1729, making it the country's second oldest municipal park. Soon the San Pedro Acequia was constructed here by the Canary Islands settlers; this irrigation facility served the city for a century and a half.

In the 19th century, the site became a military camp on more than one occasion. In 1846, US soldiers camped here; they were later followed by camels assigned to the region as part of Jefferson Davis's Camel Corps (it didn't work).

Today the neighborhood is a quiet residential district but best known as home of San Pedro Park.
