Schilo's Deli, San Antonio
The deli was founded by Papa Fritz Schilo, a German immigrant. He opened a saloon in 1917, but when Prohibition came along he converted the operation to a deli. It was a lucky break for diners; mere suds could never match the subs and sandwiches that keep this deli packed with locals. We'd recommend a Reuben or a ham and cheese, or go all out for dinner with entrees like wienerschnitzel or bratwurst. The homemade root beer is a must. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through
Saturday. Location: 428 E. Commerce St., San Antonio
