Schilo's Deli, San Antonio

Just around the corner from Casa Rio, Schilo's (to sound like a local, say she-lows) deli is located on the street, not on the River Walk. What it lacks in atmosphere, it definitely makes up for in history.

The deli was founded by Papa Fritz Schilo, a German immigrant. He opened a saloon in 1917, but when Prohibition came along he converted the operation to a deli. It was a lucky break for diners; mere suds could never match the subs and sandwiches that keep this deli packed with locals.

We'd recommend a Reuben or a ham and cheese, or go all out for dinner with entrees like wienerschnitzel or bratwurst. The homemade root beer is a must.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Saturday.

Location: 428 E. Commerce St., San Antonio
