Spanish Governor's Palace, San Antonio

Located near Market Square, this historic site was once home of the officials of the Spanish Province of Texas. Today it's the only remaining example in Texas of an early aristocratic Spanish home.

Completed in 1749, the structure is open for self-guided tours of the antique furnished rooms and cobblestone patio.

Don't expect a palace in the usual sense of the word—turrets and towers are replaced by a simple patio and courtyard here. Remember, this site dates back to the early 18th century, a time when the area was wild and unsettled, and this was considered quite ornate, comparatively speaking.

Location: 105 Plaza de Armas, downtown
