St. Anthony- A Wyndham Historic Hotel

Labeled as a Wyndham Historic Hotel, the St. Anthony has certainly seen its share of history and probably even made some at the same time. Construction began on the hotel in 1909, when San Antonio was just a Texas cow town.

Soon after its opening, it was rated in the same category as New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria by some visitors. The property was bought in 1935 by entrepreneur Ralph W. Morrison, who initiated many changes including the addition of a 10-story tower and air conditioning.

Suite 884 at the St. Anthony Hotel was renamed for actor John Wayne. The star of The Alamo film stayed at the hotel in 1960 and again in 1978 for the National Entertainers' Conference.

Since 1909, the St. Anthony has been the place for celebrities and dignitaries to stay while in the Alamo City. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stopped here, as well as General Douglas MacArthur, President Eisenhower, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, Fred Astaire, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, and Rock Hudson. More recently, Arnold Schwartzenegger and Maria Shriver, Bruce Willis, George Clooney, and many others have stayed at this elegant accommodation.

But don’t be intimidated by all the names surrounding the St. Anthony, its rooms are available to anyone who wants to stay there. Every room is equipped with hair dryers, coffee makers, phones with data ports and voice mail and irons and ironing boards.

If you’d like to dine where the stars eat, look no further than The Madrid Room, found on the grounds of the St. Anthony. The Madrid room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an old world Spanish atmosphere and features Italian cuisine with a Southwestern twist. Also on property, Pete’s Pub offers guests drinks and light meals while they relax after a long day or converse with fellow guests. Don’t miss the St. Anthony’s Sunday Brunch, regarded as one of the best weekend brunches in San Antonio.

Location: 300 E. Travis
