Aquarena Center, San Marcos Nature lovers enjoy Aquarena Center, which offers free admission. This resort dates back to 1928, when A. B. Rogers purchased 125 acres at the headwaters of the San Marcos River to create a grand hotel. He added glass-bottomed boats to cruise Spring Lake, fed by more than 200 springs that produce 150 millions per day. This 98% pure spring water is home to many fishing including white albino catfish and various types of plant life. Today visitors can still enjoy the glass-bottom boats and will see the site of an underwater archaeological dig that unearthed the remains of Clovis Man, one of the hunter-gatherers who lived along the San Marcos River over 13,000 years ago. Formerly an amusement park, today Aquarena Center focuses on ecotourism through exhibits and activities aimed at introducing visitors of all ages to the natural history of the region. This family-friendly park encourages visitors to stroll the grounds and have a look at an historic Spanish mission as well as exhibits and aquariums that feature endangered species.
