Located between Austin and San Antonio on Interstate 35, this city is home to the largest outlet malls in Texas and brings in devoted shoppers by the busload. The downtown area, located west of I-35, underwent $16 million in renovations and has been transformed it into a shopping and dining area where visitors can see the work of Texas artists, dine on Texas cuisine or shop for Texas crafts.

During the summer months, San Marcos is a popular getaway because of the San Marcos River. The crystal-clear waters of the river flow through downtown and several companies offer float trips down the waterway; snorkeling is also popular.
