Ammannsville, Texas Travel Guide

ammannsville painted church

Region: Prairies & Lakes

On the The Painted Churches Tour

From Dubina, continue north on FM 1383, turning west as FM 1383 intersects with FM 1965 and continues as FM 1383. Ammannsville was settled by both German and Czech immigrants in the 1870s, growing by 1900 to include multiple stores, blacksmiths, a physician, and two gins.

Eventually the population of this agricultural community dwindled, though, and today only just over 40 residents call Ammannsville home.

Attraction

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. 7745 Mensik Road. Distinctive for its light pink interior, this church also sports faux marble columns, ones painstakingly painted to resemble the real thing. Built in 1918, this church was painted the following year. The church has stained glass windows illustrating the Czech history of the parish. Mass is held at this church on Saturdays at 5:00 P.M. (in odd months), Sunday at 9:30 A.M. (in even months), and Fridays at 5:00 P.M.
