Dubina, Texas Travel Guide

Region: Prairies & Lakes

On the The Painted Churches Tour

From Schulenburg, head northeast on US 90 to the intersection of FM 1383. Turn north on 1383 and continue just over two miles to the community of Dubina.

Nicknamed the “Mother Czechs in Texas,” Dubina holds the title as the first Czech settlement in the Lone Star State. Even its name—derived from the term for an oak grove—harks back to its Czech roots.

Attraction

Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. FM 1383, no phone. Built in 1909,  this church is home to spectacular murals. Covered over during a 1952 remodel, the paintings were uncovered in 1981 and renovated by a local parishioner. The murals depict winged angels and elaborate stencil patterns. Mass is held here on Saturdays at 4:00 P.M. and Sundays at 10:15 A.M.
