Hostyn, Texas Travel Guide

Region: Prairies & Lakes

Along the The Painted Churches Tour

hostyn grottoFrom Ammannsville, continue west on FM 1383 to the intersection of US 77, turning north to the intersection of FM 2436. Turn left on FM 2436 and continue one mile to the community of Hostyn.

It’s easy to see why this community was first named Bluff; the town overlooks the Colorado River. Settled by Germans in the 1830s and joined by Czech settlers twenty years later, the name was later changed to Hostyn after a Moravian city.

Attractions

Hostyn Grotto. FM 2436. This grotto, a replica of France’s Grotto of Lourdes, was constructed in 1925 in thanks for the conclusion of the 1924-1925 drought. The grotto is located at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church; the grounds are also home to an adjoining cemetery.

The cemetery is of interest not only for its Czech tombstones but also for the graves of a father and son buried side by side—although they ought on opposing sides during the Civil War. Open daylight hours.
