Terlingua, Texas Travel Guide
During the early 20th century, mining in the Big Bend region brought many prospectors to the area and the communities of Boquillas and Terlingua were formed. Farming grew as an industry as well in the Rio Grande flood plain. During its boom days, quicksilver mines helped the population reach nearly 2,000. When the price of mercury dropped in the 1940s, Terlingua became a ghost town. Thanks in part to tourism generated by adjacent Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park, the area's economy is improving. Each November, Terlingua swells when thousands descend upon the town for its famous chili cook-off. Attractions Terlingua Trading Company. You'll find jewelry, books, gourmet foods, and an extensive selection of Mexican imports in the former headquarters of the Chisos Mining Company. Location: 100 Ivy Street Where to Eat Starlight Theatre Restaurant & Bar. Located in a 1930s movie theater, this restaurant features live music and an eclectic dinner menu including chili, flet mignon, grilled margarita chicken, enchiladas and more.
