Region: Gulf Coast

Along with its sister city, La Marque, Texas City is an important port city located between Houston and Galveston. Along with its petrochemical industries, the city is home to many watersport activities including fishing and sailing. Outlet shopping also draws many day trippers from Houston.

Attractions

Bay Street Park. This 50-acre park is located at the site of the first US Aerosquadron from 1913 to 1915 and home to several commemorative installations: the Wings of Heritage, a display of life-size airplanes; the Thomas S. Mackey Nature Center, a wildlife habitat dedicated to Eagle Boy Scouts and Golden Girl Scouts; and the Challenger Seven Memorial, in memory of the astronauts who died in the 1986 space shuttle tragedy. Picnic areas, playground equipment, and birding observation decks are found throughout the park. Located at 9th Avenue and Bay Street. Admission is free.

Mainland Museum of Texas City. This museum features the history of Texas City, industries of the region, a railroad depot, an old schoolhouse, and a general store. Located at 409 6th Street.

Festivals and Special Events

JUNE: Funfest. This festival kicks off summer Texas-style with a barbecue cookoff, amusement rides, a children's parade and live music. Watch the local tennis and golf competitions, and the rollerblading and BMX bicycle demonstrations, scattered throughout the city. Most events are held on Texas City's historic Sixth Street.

AUGUST: Shrimp Boil. The "harvest" of the Texas Gulf is celebrated at this shrimp boil, with hundreds of pounds of boiled shrimp and vegetables as well as live entertainment...just show up at the Rotary Pavilion in Nessler Park.
