Texas Historic Museums

Austin

In Austin, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum serves as a showcase of the history of the Lone Star State, ranging from European exploration to recent times. Children especially enjoy the multimedia special effects Texas Spirit Theater on the second floor. The museum is also home to an IMAX® Theatre with capacity to show both 2-D and 3-D movies. The second floor of the museum highlights the Alamo, with the Revolution Theater built to resemble the Alamo the day after the battle.; a video told from the point of view of military leader Juan Seguin takes visitors back to the fateful day.

Houston Area

Adjacent to the Battleship Texas, the San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Park marks the victory of the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto and the end of the Texas Revolution against Mexico. An obelisk monument has a viewing platform with a view of the Houston Ship Channel; at the base of the monument, a museum traces the early days of Texas. The museum also shows a multimedia presentation about the battle for independence.

San Antonio

The early days of Texas included immigration to this region by groups from around the world. The 30 ethnic groups that settled in Texas are explored at San Antonio's Institute of Texan Cultures. The museum has a dome show with 36 screens that highlight the many people who populated the region. Children especially enjoy visiting with the costumed docents who speak in character about the life of a chuckwagon cook or frontier wife.
