Texas for Families

What's your favorite recipe for a successful family vacation? Sun, sand and surf? Historic and educational sights? Plenty of activity and sports challenge? Natural attractions?

Then you're in luck. You'll find a full menu of family-friendly offerings in the Lone Star State, which welcomes families year around with plenty of attractions to meet every interest. From big-city museums and theme parks to small-town ranches and parks, families find plenty of chances for vacation fun.

When to Go

As family vacationers, the timing of your vacation will probably rely as much on your children's school schedules as on your travel desires. For those with preschool children, however, or families with flexible schedules, the fall and spring months can be some of Texas's most temperate months. You'll find that many community festivals are scheduled during these seasons, and attractions are less crowded than during the summer months. (The exception is the Texas coast during Spring Break, when thousands of students crowd South Padre Island.)

For travelers who must plan vacation trips during the summer months, keep in mind that summers in Texas are hot - --sometimes extremely hot. Three-digit temperatures aren't unusual. Plan activities during the early morning and late evenings, and retire to your hotel pool during the hottest afternoons. Make sure you pack a hat and sunscreen for every member of the family.
