Texas Rules of the Road
Driver's License requirements: To drive in Texas you must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver's license. Residents of most other countries may drive as long as they have valid licenses from their home countries. Speed limits: In 1995,
Texas raised the speed limit from 55 mph to 70 mph. In heavily traveled
corridors, though, the limit remains 55. Be sure to check speed
limit signs carefully. Right Turn on Red: Everywhere
in the state you may make a right turn at a red light after a full
stop unless a sign is posted prohibiting a right turn on red. Seat Belts: All drivers and front-seat passengers must wear seat belts. Children under age four must wear a seat belt at all time, whether seated in the front or back. Children under age two must only ride in a federally approved child safety seat. Motocycle Helmet Laws: Motorcyclists under age 21 must wear a helmet at all times; motorcyclists age 21 and over are not required to wear helmets if they have proof of insurance valued over $10,000 or have proof of completion of a motorcycle operations course. For More Information: Contact the Texas Department of Transportation at 800/687-7846. |
