Garner State Park Size: 1419 acres Recommended for: camping,
hiking, nature study, picnicking, non-motorized boating, fishing, swimming Named for John Nance Garner, this beautiful state park is located on the chilly, spring-fed waters of the Frio River (frio means "cold" in Spanish). There are campsites, screened shelters, cabins with double beds, an 18-hole miniature golf course, and a one-mile hiking trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. The highlight of the park is the river, filled with swimmers, inner-tubers, and paddleboats during the warmer months. Other activities include bike riding along a surfaced trail over half a mile in length, hiking 5-1/2 miles of trails, miniature golf in season, and paddle boating. Campers can bring their own facilities or rent a screened shelter or cabin. (The park is so popular that travelers who rent a cabin on either Friday or Saturday night must take both nights.) Location: Concan, 31 miles north of Uvalde, 9 miles south of Leakey, or 8 miles north of Concan on the Frio River. From US 83, turn east on FM 1050 for .5 mile to Park Road 29; (830) 232-6132 Return to Uvalde Travel Guide |
