Uvalde, Texas Travel Guide

Head west from San Antonio along US 90 to one of the Hill Country’s top nature getaways: the town of Uvalde. This historic community is located at the edge of the Hill Country and is home to several ecotourism escapes including Garner State Park.

Named for Uvalde’s most famous citizen, Vice-President John Nance Garner, the park is located 31 miles north of Uvalde on US 83 on the chilly, spring-fed waters of the Frio River. (The small town has also produced two well-known Hollywood names: Dale Evans Rogers and Matthew McConaughey.)

The career of Garner, who served as FDR’s vice president during his first and second terms, is recalled at the Uvalde Memorial Museum. The museum is housed in the former home of the politician.

After a visit to the museum, you also might want to make a visit to Fort Inge County Park, located at the site of an old Cavalry post dating back to 1849. You'll find picnic grounds as well as hiking trails here; this park is open weekends only.

Uvalde is located on the Leona River in the last outreaches of the Hill Country, an area first settled by the Spanish who attempted to construct missions to convert the Lipan-Apache Native Americans. This plan was soon abandoned because of repeated attacks on the mission.

Attractions:

The Briscoe Art and Antique Collection at the First State Bank of Uvalde. The former governor Dolph Briscoe and his wife assembled this collection which ranges from Western art to Rembrandt. Located at 200 E. Nopal St.

Garner Memorial Museum. This was once the home of Uvalde's most famous citizen: John Nance Garner, vice president of the United States during Franklin Roosevelt's first and second presidential terms. The museum is filled with reminders of Garner's political career. 333 N. Park St.
