This Rio Grande Valley community located just west of Mcallen dates back to 1824 when
citrus groves were planted here. Today Mission is the center of the state's
grapefruit industry.
Attractions:
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. This park
is especially popular with birders, who come from around the globe for
the chance to spot the 200 species often seen here. The park includes
camping, picnic sites, fishing, and a group shelter. From Mission, 3 miles
west on U.S. 83, then 3 miles south on FM 2062 to Park Rd. 43.
La Lomita Chapel. Built in 1865, this chapel was
a nightly stop for priests on their way through the valley. The chapel
is surrounded by a park with picnic sites. From Mission, 3 miles west
on U.S. 83, then 3 miles south on FM 2062 to Park Rd. 43.
Los Ebanos International Ferry. This is the only
hand-operated ferry on the U.S.-Mexico border. It shuttles cars and passengers
across the Rio Grande. From Mission, 17 miles west via U.S. 83.

Special Events, Festivals:
February: Texas Citrus Fiesta. This festival celebrates
the Rio Grande Valley's citrus crop with food booths, demonstrations,
and live music.
October: Texas Butterfly Festival. The butterfly
is the star of the show at this event which includes art shows, nature
shows, tours of local gardens, and seminars for kids.
