Van Horn, Texas Travel Guide

Region: Big Bend Country

This West Texas community is a popular stop for I-10 travelers. The town has a long history of mining. Today visitors often make a stop here on their way to Marfa or Alpine.

Attractions

Culberson County Historical Museum. The local history exhibits here in the Clark Hotel include Native American artifacts and frontier memorabilia. Location: 110 E. Business Loop 10.

Smokehouse Auto Museum. This classic car museum at the Smokehouse Restaurant boasts a large collection of restored autos. Also on view are memorabilia related to the auto. Location: 905 W. Business Loop 10.

Dining

Chuy's Restaurant. You may have heard about Chuy's from sports announcer John Madden, the unofficial celebrity sponsor of the restaurant. Enchiladas and fajitas are top choices but also look for seafood and steak...or follow Madden's lead with the steak picado chicken: cubed chicken breast fried on the grill with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, topped with cheese sauce and served with rice, beans and a tortilla. Location: 1200 W. Broadway

Smokehouse. This barbecue restaurant has themed rooms, from sports and aviation memorabilia to antiques. The big draw, though, are their smoked meats as well as steaks, sandwiches and Mexican food. Location: 905 Broadway
