Vernon, Texas Travel Guide

Region: Panhandle Plains

This community, named for George Washington's Mount Vernon home, is the center for the surrounding farm and ranch land. Although there are few attractions in the small town, it makes a nice stop on an area drive.

Attractions

Historic Doan's Adobe House. The oldest building in Wilbarger County, this house was constructed in 1881 for Mr. and Mrs. Corwin Doan and family. It is on the Western Trail's cattle crossing over the Red River, where thousands of cattle passed annually on the way north to the Kansas cattle markets. The one-room house is furnished as it might have been in the heyday of the cattle drives. To reach the house, follow the signs on US 283N.

Red River Valley Museum. Look for local history exhibits including area ranching as well as local artwork and Native American artifacts in this museum. Located at 4600 College Drive, 940-553-1848

Festivals

May: Santa Rosa Roundup. This four-day rodeo held the third week in May includes precision riding by the Santa Rosa Palomino Club, who have performed across the US and Canada, a downtown parade, and live music. The event is considered one of the best rodeos for its size in the country.

August: Summer's Last Blast. This car show includes a procession of cars downtown and a block-party atmosphere.
