Victoria, Texas Travel Guide

Named for the first president of Mexico, this historic community dates back to 1824. The community was one of the first incorporated by the Republic of Texas and today has many historic structures. The town is a popular stop for travelers headed to the Gulf but also has several good attractions, especially the unique Texas Zoo.

Attractions:

Coleto Creek Reservoir. This park is a favorite with anglers and boaters and also offers camping and fishing. Originally a cooling pond for the local power and light company, the park is now a favorite with families. From Victoria, 14 miles southwest via U.S. 59S.

Memorial Square. This city park features a wind-powered grist mill with grindstones from Germany, all used by early settlers in the Victoria area. It's also home to the steam locomotive, Southern Pacific Old No. 771, a gift from the railroad. The park is also the site of the city's oldest public burial ground. Located at Commercial and Wheeler Streets.

Riverside Park. Situated on the Guadalupe River, this park offers picnicking areas and playgrounds. Also within the park, the Texas Zoo (110 Memorial Dr.) is filled with Texas species only. All are housed in animal-friendly habitats without bars or cages. The park is located at Red River and Memorial Sts.
