Walburg Restaurant
This restaurant is housed in the 1882 Walburg Mercantile building and features authentic German food and music. Behind the restaurant, a converted cotton gin serves as a biergarten. The restaurant menu includes Wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, sauerbraten, and some Texas favorites like chicken fried steak and catfish. The buffets (dinner on Friday and Saturday, all day on Sunday) are particular popular and include a wide selection of the restaurant’s top items. A more limited menu is served in the biergarten (right). The Walburg Restaurant is owned by Ron Tippelt who originally hails from Munich, Germany. Nearly two decades ago, Tippelt packed up his accordion and headed for Walburg, creating this restaurant with recipes from his homeland. Tippelt’s contribution didn’t end there, however, he also puts his musical talents to work in the biergarten. The accordionist and yodeler assembled The Walburg Boys, a band that plays Bavarian tunes that encourage the dancefloor to fill. Tippelt is walking in the footsteps of another Munich immigrant: Hy Doering. In 1882, Doering settled in Walburg and built the Walburg Mercantile that today serves as the home of the popular restaurant.
Festivals The restaurant hosts several annual celebrations including Maifest and Oktoberfest. Hours The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday; it is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Location: 3777 FM 972 (at the intersection of FM 972 and FM 1105) Video Resource Here's a little 30-second commercial for the restaurant; makes us hungry for schnitzel!
